How autonomous AI agents make the transition from copilots to full automation

The era of passive chatbots is over. Autonomous AI agents do not wait for input; they proactively handle complete business processes. We discuss the shift and its impact on productivity.

From talking to doing: The new AI colleague

The past few years have been dominated by 'copilots': handy chat boxes that write text or generate code when you ask them to. But while copilots are useful, they have one major drawback: they do nothing on their own. You have to constantly talk to them, give instructions, and manually copy the results into your systems. That is not automation; it is an interactive dictionary.

The real revolution lies with autonomous AI agents. These are systems that do not wait for a prompt but are given a goal (e.g., 'process all outstanding returns') and then go to work independently.

The 4 steps of autonomous handling

An autonomous agent independently goes through a cycle to complete tasks from start to finish, without human intervention:

  1. Intake & Context: The agent reads an incoming email or WhatsApp message and understands the underlying intent (for example, a customer wanting to change their delivery address).
  2. Planning & Tool Selection: The agent determines what needs to happen. It independently selects the right tools from its toolbox (such as accessing the CRM system via an API integration).
  3. Autonomous Execution: The agent performs the action. It updates the address in the database and verifies that the change was successfully saved.
  4. Quality Control & Confirmation: Finally, the agent drafts a friendly confirmation email in the company's brand voice and sends it to the customer. The ticket is closed automatically.

How fast this is moving in the Netherlands

This is no longer a story about the future. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has tracked adoption since 2023, and it is moving fastest in exactly the company size most of our clients sit in: among businesses with 50 to 250 employees, AI use grew from 20 percent in 2023 to 45 percent in 2025. More than doubled in two years.

Mind the definition, because it is often quoted wrong. This covers companies from fifty employees up. Among micro-businesses of two to nine people the figure is markedly lower. Anyone saying "almost half of SMEs use AI" is stretching it.

What companies use AI for, according to CBS (share of companies already using AI, 2025)
Application Share What an agent does here
Marketing or sales 35% Qualifying and answering quote requests
Administration or governance 32% Scheduling, translation, updating records
R&D or innovation 25% Outside the scope of a customer-contact agent
Logistics 4% Handling status questions and delivery arrangements

Note where the weight sits: marketing, sales and administration — precisely the work that arrives by email and WhatsApp. That is not a coincidence. It is the work with the most repetition and the fewest exceptions.

What changes once it acts instead of talks

A system that performs actions carries obligations a chatbot does not. Writing about the transparency risk under the AI Act, the European Commission states that people must be made aware they are interacting with a machine so they can make an informed decision. Those transparency rules took effect in August 2026.

In practice that means three things. Every message the agent sends makes clear it comes from an AI. Every action in a real system is traceable in a log. And it is established up front what the agent may not do on its own — that last question is where most demos go quiet.

Why copilots were just a transition

Businesses do not need another tool that employees have to chat with all day. They need capacity. Autonomous agents solve this by completely removing repetitive work. This allows your human team to focus on complex customer inquiries, relationship building, and strategic growth. The agent is not an assistant that helps you type; it is a colleague that simply gets the job done.
